Logar Valley

Logar Valley is a stunning gem nestled in the Kamnik Alps in Solčava, Slovenia. The valley gets its name from the Logar Farm, which is derived from the Slovene word log, meaning "swampy meadow." In 1987, the valley was granted protected status as a landscape park, covering 24.75 square kilometers (9.56 square miles) of breathtaking natural beauty.

This classic U-shaped glacial valley is divided into three parts: the lower section, known as Log, the middle section called Plest or Plestje, and the upper part, Kot or Ogradec. Despite its remote location, 35 people live on the valley's isolated farmsteads, adding to its peaceful, untouched atmosphere.

Surrounded by towering peaks, Logar Valley offers spectacular views and challenging terrain for mountain climbers. For those who prefer a more relaxed pace, there’s a scenic walking trail that takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete. The path passes through picturesque sights, including the source of Black Creek (Črna), historic wooden logging chutes, a burl-covered ash tree, and a charming charcoal-maker's hut.

Whether you're an avid hiker, a cyclist, or simply someone who loves to explore the outdoors, Logar Valley is the perfect destination for a tranquil retreat amidst nature's beauty.

The Heart Road - A Heart Among the Vineyards

Just 20 kilometers from the city of Maribor, right next to the Austrian border, lies one of Slovenia's most charming sights - the heart-shaped road of Špičnik, in the scenic village of Svečina (municipality of Kungota).

Surrounded by rolling hills and picturesque vineyards, this iconic road winds its way through the Šerbinek winegrowing estate. The best view of the heart can be enjoyed from the Dreisiebner tourist farm, where a specially built viewing platform offers an unforgettable panorama of the road and surrounding countryside. You can drive directly along the heart-shaped road to reach the farm, where a small, free gravel parking area is available for visitors.

Access to the viewing platform costs just 5 euros per person, while children under 15 can enjoy the view for free. As a special touch, the entrance fee includes a complimentary gift - typically a bottle of local wine to take home. Beyond the beautiful views, the Dreisiebner farm is also a great place to explore the region's rich tradition of viticulture and sample some of their excellent wines.

Interestingly, the road's romantic curve was a complete accident. During construction, a right turn was added to reduce the steepness of the path - and by chance, it formed the now-famous heart shape.

If you're in the mood for a walk, the Border Mountain Trail (Mejna planinska pot) passes right by the farm. It's perfect for exploring the vineyards on foot, with plenty of scenic viewpoints along the way. All around you, the landscape is blanketed in vineyards - but the heart-shaped road remains the crown jewel of the region.

Sightseeing

Lake Bled and Bled Castle

Bled Castle is a stunning medieval fortress perched on a cliff high above the picturesque town of Bled in Slovenia, offering breathtaking views over Lake Bled. As the oldest castle in Slovenia, it's not just a historic landmark but also a fascinating museum where visitors can explore exhibits that tell the rich history of the lake and the surrounding region.

Lake Bled, nestled in the Julian Alps in the Upper Carniolan region, is a stunning natural wonder with a unique mix of glacial and tectonic origins. The lake measures 2,120 meters (6,960 feet) in length and 1,380 meters (4,530 feet) in width, reaching a maximum depth of 29.5 meters (97 feet). Surrounded by lush forests and towering mountains, the lake is the perfect destination for nature lovers. Visitors can take a traditional boat ride on the lake, adding to the charm of this serene landscape.

At the heart of the lake is Bled Island, a small but magical island home to several buildings, with the main highlight being the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary. The church is a masterpiece, featuring Gothic frescoes from around 1470 and beautifully ornate Baroque furnishings. It also boasts a 52-meter (171-foot) tower and a Baroque stairway built in 1655, with 99 stone steps leading up to the church. This iconic church is not only a popular place for visitors but also a favorite spot for weddings. It’s considered good luck for the groom to carry his bride up the steps on their wedding day, ring the church bell, and make a wish inside.

The island is traditionally reached by a pletna, a beautiful wooden boat that adds to the timeless charm of this incredible destination.

Predjama Castle

Just a few kilometres from Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle is one of Slovenia's most unforgettable sights. Perched dramatically in the middle of a 123-metre-high cliff, this extraordinary medieval fortress is the largest cave castle in the world and proudly holds a place in the Guinness World Records. For over 800 years, it has captured imaginations with its incredible location, hidden passageways, and the daring legends of knight Erazem, who is said to have used secret tunnels to outwit his enemies and launch raids.

The castle is not only a masterpiece of medieval architecture but also a testament to human ingenuity and harmony with nature. Beneath it lies the Cave under Predjama Castle - a vast four-level cave system, home to a colony of bats and open for guided tours from June to August. The castle itself is open year-round and offers an atmospheric glimpse into a time when safety came before comfort, and legends were born in stone.

Featured in a few films and documentaries, Predjama Castle has even caught the attention of Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Whether you're drawn by its romantic setting, thrilling history, or mysterious underground world, a visit here is like stepping into a real-life fairytale. Perfect for families, adventurers, and dreamers alike.

Cave exploration

Postojna Cave

Postojna Cave is one of Slovenia's most remarkable natural wonders, stretching for 24.34 kilometers (15.12 miles), making it the second longest cave system in the country. Located near the town of Postojna in southwestern Slovenia, this fascinating cave has been a top tourist destination since 1819, when Archduke Ferdinand first visited, helping to establish it as a popular attraction.

Carved over millions of years by the Pivka River, the cave is a breathtaking world of stalagmites, stalactites, and stunning curtains or draperies - formations that resemble folded curtains hanging from the cave's ceilings. The cave system consists of four interconnected caves, all linked by an underground river, creating a fascinating and otherworldly landscape. One of the highlights of the cave is its inhabitants, the olm - the world's largest troglodytic amphibian. Visitors can see these rare creatures in a special aquarium during their tour.

While the cave system is 24 km long, only 5 km is open to the public. The adventure begins with a train ride that covers 3.5 km of the cave, taking visitors through the most spectacular sections. The remaining 1.5 km is explored on foot with an expert guide. The entire tour lasts about 1.5 hours, and the cave maintains a cool temperature of 10°C (50°F), so be sure to bring a light jacket!

In addition to the cave itself, visitors can explore the EXPO Postojna Cave Karst Exhibition, which opened in April 2014. This is the largest permanent exhibition dedicated to the world of caves and karst landscapes. Through interactive displays, 3D projections, and detailed models, guests can learn about the history of the cave's development as a tourist destination, as well as explore the unique geological and ecological features of the karst environment. The Wall of Fame also showcases key historic events related to Postojna Cave, making it a perfect stop for anyone interested in the cave’s rich legacy.

Soča River Valley

The Soča River, also known as Isonzo in Italian, is a spectacular 138 kilometer (86 mile) river that flows through the stunning landscapes of western Slovenia and northeastern Italy. The river is renowned for its emerald green waters, which have earned it the nickname "The Emerald Beauty". It's one of the rare rivers in the world that maintains such a vibrant, magical color throughout its entire length. This mesmerizing river has also inspired art and literature, including the renowned poem Soči (To the Soča) by poet Simon Gregorčič, and even served as the backdrop for the 2008 Disney film Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
